Another Chrismas has come and gone
We talked to our son in the Army who is stationed in Afghanistan on both Christmas Day and the 26th!!!! He is doing well and sounds good, it was such a good surprise to hear from him. Sweet husband and son talked for over an hour. Son sounded tired, but as always is in good spirits. He is very busy but feels the work he and his team does is doing good for the people there. We have had many pictures from him, and son looks so good. Son is 38 and suffered a back injury several years ago, (jumping from a perfectly good airplane for an army competition) and he is probably in the best shape of his life. He is running 5 to 8 miles everyday and may participate in a marathon! Our oldest son in the marathon runner. Army son has always run, but only for needed exercise, and after his accident, I really thought he would never include this much running in his exercise routine! Son will be coming home on leave for 2 weeks the end of January, actually will be flying home on his birthday! It will be so good to see him. His sweet wife certainly is ready for him to be home, but it is so hard to say good-bye again in only two weeks!!!! I will be so happy for him to be home for good - next September!!! The past few months have been quick, so hopefully the remainder of this tour will go by as quickly!!!
I am so thankful for the freedoms we have and to live in America. We do have economic problems, but we do live in a country with no restrictions and much religious freedom and that I am thankful for!

A Peek at Winter
With Christmas right around the corner, I have a lot to do to be ready. I haven't put up my Christmas tree yet, but hope to in the next day or so. I have most shopping done, only a few items left. With a retirement budget, I have had to make major changes in my holiday spending. All the family will be here to celebrate on the 26th except for son in Afghanastan. We have been getting lots of pictures from him. He seems to be doing well. Son tells us that they expect the bad winter weather soon in the area. I am thankful for each safe day son and his soldiers have.

Auction in East Texas
It is cold this morning, hovering at 32 and I am going to bundle up and go for a walk. I have done good on diet and exercise this week, then fell off the wagon last night and ate donuts. We will go to church with friend this morning. I love her little country church.

This evening, husband and I are baby sitting with grandaughter and grandson! They are watching RV with Robin Williams. They are laughing a lot, so they must be enjoying it!

Things I am Thankful for:
I am healthy, and my husband is healthy!
Retirement
Family – Three sons, Wonderful Daughters-in-law and Daughter-in-love, 5 grandchildren, 1 great-granddaughter
Large Extended Family
Friends
Another Safe Day for my son in Afghanistan-which brings him closer to returning home!
Thanksgiving – A time to reflect on what I am really thankful for! We had a great day with family! What a wonderful group we had this year – 16 adults and 7 kiddos:
My 80 year mother, my husband and I
My sweet daughter in Law (married to son in Afghanistan)
Son, his sweet wife and her mom, grandson and granddaughter
Daughter in love (husband's daughter – I have always hated the term step-daughter/ step-mother – I have always been Ginger!) granddaughter, and great-granddaughter
Brother-in Law and Niece (Sister home recovering from surgery!)
Husband's brother and Niece
Nephew with girlfriend and her son
Niece and boyfriend (and soon to be great- nephew)
Nephew and wife and great-niece and great-nephew
We had such a wonderful day- the weather was perfect mid 70s! I baked the day before and was up early to finish dinner preparations! Sweet husband helped me put the final touches on the house, as always I was a little behind! My sweet daughter in law arrived early with my son in Afghanistan on the phone! This is the first time I have spoken with him since he has left the US. He sounded great! He had pizza for his dinner – made me sad. He didn't try to make it to the mess hall because there was a huge line – the Secretary of Defense was there! Son will be traveling to see each of his soldiers in the next 10 days – they are in small groups throughout the area. Pray he is safe in his travels in this area!!! Sweet daughter in law brought mimosas – love those mimosas!!!
We had a wonderful dinner – traditional Thanksgiving menu Included: Fried turkey – prepared by brother-in-law. He has been doing the turkeys for years and they are the best! (I have the bones simmering on the stove to make soup!) Ham, Cornbread dressing and lots of gravy, Mashed Potatoes, Green Bean Casserole, Candied Yams Potatoes, Corn Casserole, Artichoke Salad, English Pea salad, and then the deserts: Pecan Pie, Apple pie, sweet potato pie, Amish bread, Cookies, and Cherry Cheese Cake. Our appetizers were cheese and crackers, chips and a dip I made with sweet potatoes! It was a hit and I will be making it again.
After dinner, all the kiddos and children went to husbands shed to play. Husband has a 30 x 60 shed we built when we moved from our home of 39 years. Husband has collected skate boards, pogo sticks, razor scooters, tricycles and the like for years. The adult nieces and nephews had as much fun as the kiddos! One nephew said we always had the BEST TOYS! Fun was had by all!
Daughter in love and grand-daughter stayed and helped me clean up and put away all the leftovers! I would not have gotten things squared away for a day or two without their help!!!I won't need to cook for quite a while.
Note about husband's brother: He has been on dialysis for 3 years with ups and downs. He is in a really good period! On Thanksgiving Day, he baked cookies for us, ran the 8 mile turkey trot, spend 4 hours in dialysis, then came here for dinner! I am so proud of him.
Fall in East Texas
What fun husband and I had in Tyler this week. We spent a few days with husband's sister and husband. We so enjoy our time with them. They have such similar interests as us. Brother-in-law-RM loves old cars as does husband. RM took husband to see the shop he is having built in his '57 Chevy. It is a beauty!!! We found a '69 Karman Gehia on eBay located in Tyler that we looked at. It was a cute little car, but no air nor heater. I really think I want something with a few more amenities!
We walked each morning. The pines in East Texas have such a wonderful smell! All the trees have changed colors and the leaves are falling. It is such a wonderful time of the year. The weather has been wonderful – in the 70's every day. D made an apple pie with red hots (yum!) I have never been a real good pie baker, but I am going to try my hand at this one. She has a "No Fail" pie crust recipe that is very good. Sister-in-law-D also had a start for Amish Friendship Bread and we made 3 loaves with raisins and pecans. It was really good. I am taking starter home with m e. I made some a few years ago when I was working and just couldn't keep up with it! Now that I am home, I do hope to keep this one going since husband really enjoyed it.
I got a new lap top a week ago and I am typing as we are going down the road home. I got the door buster deal at Wal-Mart for both RM and myself. I think I am going to enjoy this lap top. We also got a web cam today, so that is going to be fun as well. Hope I can get it hooked up with no problem once we get home and I can talk to son in Afghanistan. I am going to have to dig out documentation and software for my router so I can use the wireless function. RM, D husband and I all four played around on the computers. We had 4 laptops set up on their kitchen table!
D and I spent a little time shopping today. I took husband's watch to get a new battery, and found a great turquoise ring. If I can get a good picture, I am going to post it.
Last Sunday, the Family Readiness Group put together Christmas boxes for all the soldiers in son's unit. It was a lot of work, but certainly a worthwhile endeavor. We sent lots of goodies to each soldier, stockings, candy, nuts, etc. Several of the wives had gotten together all the items plus donations to cover all the shipping. One of wives made little containers of Texas soil for each soldier. I know they will enjoy their early Christmas presents. Pray for this group of soldiers as they are going into the harsh winter months. The weather can be unforgiving there! Sweet daughter in love got word today that son will be home in February for leave. So glad he will be home for their anniversary.
It has taken me a few days to post this blog – couldn't get old router to work. While doing shopping at Wal-Mart for Turkey Day – I picked up a new router! Yea!! Yea it only took me about 3 minutes to get it hooked up and running. I am now in the age of communication – with a wireless network at home!
Mercy how time flies by - another week gone and still haven't gotten this posted – On Sunday I baked 12 dozen cookies for the soldiers in my sons unit in Afghanistan. Then on Monday, sweet daughter-in-law and I packed up the cookies and Christmas trees to send to the groups. There are 50+ soldiers at 9 different locations, and one of the wives raised over $800 to send each soldier a Christmas box and the trees to each group. We also sent son several boxes. Our day was very productive completing 16 boxes for mailing.

Praying for our Country and our Military Forces
Let us never forget that government is ourselves and not an alien power over us. The ultimate rulers of our democracy are not a President and senators and congressmen and government officials, but the voters of this country.
—Franklin D. Roosevelt
The new President will surely need our prayers because he and his administration face huge, serious challenges to the health of our nation and to peace in the world - challenges that, in my opinion, neither he nor any government on earth will have the power to overcome without divine aid. So this is no time for Christians to go into the bunkers. No time to wail or moan over our retirement plans. This is a time to repent, to pray more, to give more. It's a time for Christians to lead, encourage, and minister to a faltering country in a faltering economy.—Chuck Colson, November 5, 2008
Bio notes on Chuck Colson on from the BreakPoint.org web site. I had to look up who he was as I knew the name but could not remember who he was.
In 1974, Colson entered a plea of guilty to Watergate-related charges; although not implicated in the Watergate burglary, he voluntarily pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice in the Daniel Ellsberg Case. He entered Alabama's Maxwell Prison in 1974 as a new Christian and as the first member of the Nixon administration to be incarcerated for Watergate-related charges. He served seven months of a one-to-three year sentence. In 1976, Colson founded Prison Fellowship Ministries, which, in collaboration with churches of all confessions and denominations, has become the world's largest outreach to prisoners, ex-prisoners, crime victims, and their families. Colson has spent the last 25 years as head of Prison Fellowship Ministries.

A One-Track Vote
By Everett Piper11/3/2008
Should Christians Be 'Singular'?
I was recently involved in a Facebook conversation with some friends who argued that Christian voters need to move beyond their fixation on one or two issues and become more concerned about the “breadth” and “complexity” of human rights and economic justice.
Grad Students: “Christians need to vote on more issues than just abortion! Why not consider the innocent civilians killed as a result of the Iraq war or all the women and children killed in Darfur and other countries?”
I am going to ask you some basic rhetorical questions. Sometimes this is the most effective tool in trying to resolve deep-seated differences. When we strongly disagree, we often just talk past each other, and a well placed question can be of much greater value than dozens of well worn arguments. So here goes.
First, when you say that Christians should vote on more than one issue, aren’t you being rather presumptuous in implying that single issue voting is really what “all Christians” do? Isn’t it a bit fallacious to lump “all” of any group of people into one big category? I know—you are likely saying that you didn’t mean “all” Christians, but go back and look at the emotion, tone, and content of your comments. Your all-inclusive critique of those who disagree with you does come through loud and clear and, dare I say, your presumption betrays your argument’s weakness. Such an indiscriminate casting of the net of criticism falls on some very shallow intellectual waters, in my opinion, and I think we should be a bit more disciplined in our logic.
Second, in your argument you hold up abortion and war in juxtaposition and the way you pose your question presupposes that war is wrong. But on what premise do you make this claim? Is it because you assume the value of human life? If this is the case, then aren’t you admitting that the definition of “humanness” is an objective standard that can never be one group’s prerogative to reject or take away? Aren’t you basically saying that all human life is an unalienable right endowed by a Creator and never subject to someone else’s choice, even in the case of war?
You see, this is a matter of ontology and epistemology as much as anything. Does life exist and, if so, how do we define (or “know”) it? If we believe in the objective reality of life and that God is the definer of this reality, then we must never presume to wrestle such “definitions” away from Him and unto ourselves. If the definition of an infant’s life is “beyond my pay grade,” then would the definition of other important matters likewise be beyond human reason and beyond the responsibilities of my job—matters such as the end of life and who has the right to determine it, or the quality of life and who has the right to judge it?
Can you see where the momentum of your ideas takes you? If you implicitly diminish the loss of life through one means (i.e., abortion), you at the same time minimize the very standards you use to condemn the loss of life through other means (i.e., war). You are sawing off the branch upon which you must sit to make your case in the first place. I think I have made my point, so I will stop. But, one last thing: If you agree (as you have said) that abortion is a moral tragedy and that “the fewer abortions the better,” then aren’t you at least by inference admitting that the victims of abortion were/are human in the first place? If so, then the entire argument of “choice” must now be abandoned as vacuous because at no time in legal or ethical history has one person’s choice ever been rightly elevated above another person’s right to live. Has it?
Fourth, I would like to go back to the issue of war. Are you saying that all war is wrong and that total pacifism is your position? If so, great—as long as you are consistent. But if you, like Augustine, believe in a “just war” theology, then perhaps it is erroneous to equate the killing of innocent children with the casualties of war. The debate here must start with the question of what is “just” and who determines its definition. Man or God? Political power or divine revelation? Is the killing of millions under the banner of “choice” of any different moral weight than the loss of thousands as a consequence of a war? If you equate the two and say they are both equally evil then you, by default, should be working as hard to stop one as the other (or maybe harder to stop the one that results in greater quantitative loss?). If you minimize one evil to justify your attention given to another, then you subjectively betray your entire argument as nothing but a personal construct that is no better or worse than the “warmonger” or despot you protest against.
Finally, I want to say a word on the issue of social justice. It is possible that those on the “right” might actually treasure justice as much as those on the “left” and that it is not really a matter of debating values (such as mercy, love, and compassion) as much as it is a debate of methods (i.e., How do we best achieve such goals?). Conservatives might actually cherish freedom, liberty, and justice as much as their liberal brothers and sisters. They just might have a different perspective on how to obtain these things.
Now a personal note: I was once much more “progressive” than I appear to be now. I was pro-choice, and I used to be a lead voice for the “you can’t legislate morality” crowd. But I don’t hold this position anymore for several reasons. First and foremost, I have concluded that it doesn’t make any sense. I mean this literally. There is no sense—no logic, no intellectual integrity or moral consistency—in this argument. Legislation, if it is nothing else, is always based on morality. Otherwise there is nothing to legislate and the entire process becomes meaningless. Wilberforce, Wesley, and a host of others recognized this. At times these great leaders were indeed dangerously close to “single issue voters.” John Wesley famously declared that “you must be singular or be damned,” and Wilberforce, in like manner, spent decades with near tunnel vision arguing to abolish slavery (because he, too, agreed that the definition of personhood was not his to make and was, therefore, not “above his pay grade”).
Oh, and by the way—Wilberforce also felt that it was his responsibility to vote for the “restoration of manners”: a return to the humility, modesty and civility that comes from considering the Law and the Logos as a singular standard better than the baser proclivities of human desire, animal instinct, and personal passion. Maybe “single issue voting” isn’t that bad after all.

Election Day finally Over!
What happened to October? Can't believe I haven't found time to post for over 5 weeks!! Boy, the last month got busy - not sure with what, but busy! We made several trips to our little farm place--15 acres in East Texas - mowing and clearing brush (mowing seems to be my life's work!) We went sailing a couple of times - several doctor appointments, sitting with grand kiddos.....I am coming up on a year of retirement, and still never seem to have enough time! I am still loving retirement - I believe God's timeline for me has been wonderful. I know I would have worked at least 3 more years, and I love having the time off from work!
I am in East Texas with my sister at my best friend's for a girls weekend. She lives in Reno, Texas - small East Texas town, only about 20 miles from OK. Her dad has 100+ acres and we went out to see him yesterday. The trees are just barely turning this year, but still the country side views are beautiful. The rolling countryside and acres of farm land are so peaceful!!! A neighbors cow got out and was on the roadside and we herded the cow back to his pasture (by car of course--I am not a real cow poke yet!!!!) We will make the 100 mile trek back to Big D today after church.
I love being here with Paula - she goes to a beautiful little country church. They have about 65 in Sunday School and about 75 or so in their Church service. It is such a joy to attend her church. I came up for a women's conference in October and they had 93 in attendance! It was such a joy and a pleasure.
I was up early for Walmart's door buster sale yesterday - I bought a new lap top for $298!!! Yea now husband and I can get online at the same time. I have had a hard time justifying spending big money for a laptop just for fun stuff. Since Don has found the Internet, I have had a hard time getting him off the computer. I still have to help him some, but he navigates around pretty good - finding lots of sailboat stuff, old car stuff.... He loves ebay and craigslist!!! He always has me finalize all his bids and purchases (hehe!!)

New Journey - Get Serious about Diet
Hopefully, I can stay with this plan. With this post, I am making the commitment to do this!
Today was another beautiful day - husband and I bicycled again, we did our Chruch Criterium!
(Criteriums-The most common form of American racing, the criterium, is a multi-lap race of 25 to 60 miles held on a closed course generally a mile or less in length. These races, which usually last one to two hours, are extremely fast -- 30 mph and up.) Well our criterium track is .35 of a mile, and we are only riding 5 miles a day which includes about a 1.5 miles to get to the church and back! On the fastest part of our lap, I can get up to about 16 miles per hour! I will never be a race cyclist, but it is fun to pedal as fast as you can for a short distance. When our boys were teenagers, I did participate in a few races.
I had a bad tension/sinus headache this afternoon after doctor appointment, and treated myself to a massage at the local massage school. I had an intern that was really good!
Sweet daughter-in-love is better today. She is back in the grove, still sad but working on being happy while son is deployed. She adopted a german shepard today to keep her little Winston (cute little dog) happy. Since son will be in the states for about a month - the major worrying won't begin until he leaves the US. Two years ago when he was in Iraq, he had Internet access, not sure he will have that luxury this time. Remember to keep all our soldiers in your thoughts and prayers daily. It is a real sacrifice for the families to be without them during their deployments! This group has many seasoned, long term soldiers in the group, many with several children, so their wives and husbands will be in for a long year.

Exercise is good for the Body and the Soul
I am still recovering from the weekend, it was incredibly tiring, party preparations, airport good-byes and then the lingering sadness. Sweet daughter-in-love was really mopey yesterday and stayed home from work. Hope she is in a better place today!
I sat with my grandchildren last night for son to go to a mandatory meeting. He was in home in time to watch the Dallas Cowboys football game. We have always been big fans. It was a great game and our Cowboys pulled out the winners! What fun!!!
We have had quite a bit of rain from the hurricane, so back to mowing today! Hope to get caught up before the weekend!

Life's Work--Mowing
We are also planning a party for this weekend for our middle son who is deploying to Afghanistan. I want everything to look nice and manicured around here. I have lots to do for the party, so I had better get busy. More on party later.

Computer Problems - Best Sailing Ever
Computer guy finally gets here about 3:30 and sets up a new modem and I am back in business, now just have to go get other computer from store pick up my computer and hope that it works as well!!! Lordy, I don't know what I did before Internet, yes I think I am addicted, my link to the outside world!!!
Pick up old computer and then I am back in business! Now back to phone and key problems!
Thursday - We went sailing - probably on the best sailing days ever! Nice long sail - medium wind only one boat on the lake - best time to go is definitely during the week when the weekend crazies are working! I just laid on the deck looking up at the sails and the sky - what a wonderful day! I must get some pictures of that view - sails and blue sky - absolutely beautiful. It was a little hot- but as long as we had a little wind it was good. After sailing, we went swimming to cool off - we had the pool to ourselves.
Now for the rest of the story - left my phone on the boat. I can't tell you how attached to my cell phone I am. I really can't go anywhere without it. Used husband's phone - thought the battery was run down, couldn't get it on - I am just technically challenged - I just did not know how to turn it on! Went to the AT&T store to get him a new phone and the girl showed me how to turn it on! Yea - I did not have to buy another phone. Sweet husband picked up my phone yesterday, so I am back in business.

Another Sailing Adventure!
We are heading to the boat again this afternoon - bicycles still loaded from Monday - and no we haven't exercised since then - I have had a bad bout with sinus and have felt rather icky and lazy. Also spend the afternoon yesterday with mom at a financial advisor getting her investments in order! Today, we are going to ride in the neighborhood around the marina, then take the boat out.
I am also going to break down and order a laptop, I am always competing with my husband for the computer!!! My husband is becoming an eBay and Craig's list junkie! He is 67 and until about 1 year ago completely afraid of the computer. He can navigate pretty good-but still won't make a bid or check emails! We have found several items on eBay we need for the boat at a very good price! I have also discovered auction sniper -thanks to brother-in-law--snipes are a very good way to win eBay bids!!!!

B & C Tour
I am trying to eat healthier and lose some of the excess pounds I have packed on in the past few years! I started weight watchers in January of this year and did good till April, then sort of fell off the wagon, but I am back on track - I have lost 17.3 pounds. I really need to lose 50-75 pounds to be at a better size for me! Dieting is always hard and never gets easy! My mom has diabetes and so did my grandmother, so I really need to get my weight at a better place - I certainly do not want to battle that disease in later life!!!

It's a good DAY when Lost Keys are Found!
Well back to lost keys--in March when I lost the keys, I was planting rose bushes. I had a load of potting soil, fertilizer and such. I remembered having the keys in my hand, then several hours later I could not find them! The same day, I planted a pair of scissors I was using to cut off tags and found them in a pile of peat moss!!!! So I thought my keys were in the same place. I was so hoping little clickers would grow beside my roses!!! We waited a week before going to the dealership and getting a new key! After paying the $50 to get the key from the VIN number, they told me it did not have a chip - the extra key at home would have worked!
So today my husband finds the lost key - sitting in the seat of his old dump truck! I am sooooo glad to have my clicker back!

Why am I so Busy?
I had some phone calls to make, emails to answer, then card to send to sweet daughter-in-law who just had carpel tunnel surgery. It seems that I talk to youngest son each morning when I am exercising! I never thought I would have need to multi-task after I retired! I never got around to breakfast, so lunch was a banana, peanut butter and honey sandwich. I spent the afternoon with my 80 year old mother running errands. We both got haircuts, did banking for both of us - two different banks - needed to get some documents notarized. We then went to the farmer's market for fresh veggies and fruit - yum, yum!! Picked up mail at the Annex, quick stop at Walgreen's for stuff - then took mother to her favorite restaurant for dinner - Lobster was wonderful. We try to get to this little out of the way restaurant about 2 or 3 times a year.
Our next stop was the library - both mother and I can never keep enough reading material! I bought several books from the .$25 paperback rack, then checked out 6 or 8 more books - reminder to self books are due back on 8/12. The library will be closed from 8/11 till 9/22 for remodeling and repairs. Then on to the grocery store and pharmacy.
I picked up some fresh basil to make tomato basil soup. Hope it turns out good. I quickly unloaded car of all market items, dividing up our purchases and taking mother her share. I then cranked up the lawnmower and mowed at mothers, the block house and our front! Even at 8:00 it was still hot - I think the high today was 103!!! I watered mothers front yard. About 3 weeks ago I planted 30 rectangles of St Augustine grass - so I have to be sure it is watered or it will die! I also watered my potted plants. Mercy - it makes me tired just thinking about 6 hours of errands. Guess I am going to call it a day and post today's entry.
So why am I so busy? I keep trying to slow down but it is not happening.

Old Cars, Family and Fredericksburg
Sailing - we started out a long weekend on Thursday with an evening sail with husband's sister and brother-in-law. No problems or mishaps this time. Brother-in-law helped with ropes and sails and it was a wonderful outing and then we just sat at the dock and enjoyed the summer breeze and the sounds of the sailboat rigging!
Life is good! What more could one ask for in one long weekend! Add some sailing and a little music and time alone to communicate with nature and thank God for our many blessings and you have perfection.
Friday - On to Fredericksburg for the weekend -- We started out by meeting my sister her husband and my niece at a little local winery for a tasting. We met with the vintner after closing for a private tasting and sampled new appetizers. My favorite wine was Three Day Weekend. Then on to the Hanger Hotel to the Officer's Club and piano bar. We had a great time!
We stayed in a great little cabin with a small little peach orchard and a little creek out back. There were two little fawns at the front when we got there. On our last morning, I had my coffee and devotion on the porch with the doe grazing on the grass in the orchard.
Old Car Swap meet on Saturday - we had a great time. There were lots of cool old cars - husband found several items on his must have list - welder, winch, folding bicycle.... Sister-in-law and I just bought a few baubles and I got a cast iron corn bread stick pan. We got lost going to Lukenbauck it was about an 8 mile trip, but it took us 57 miles! We had our pictures taken with Billy Joe Shafer. We spent the evening at the Fredericksburg Roots concert - Blue Grass - New Grass featuring the Austin Jug Band. The music was incredible!
On Sunday morning, we walked down to the little stream, and stopped and picked up some river rocks as we were heading home. We took a photo stop at Enchanted Rock State Park. I wanted some of the granet rocks and picked up a little hand full on one of the pathways - I had not read the park literature warning about such -- the forest ranger, aka rock police were right behind me! I guess I was not too much of an offender and the ranger ignored me!!! Our next stop was Llano where we had lunch at the Acme Cafe on the Square -- some of the best crab cakes I have ever eaten! This was a really memorable weekend! Hope to make this an annual trip. There are lots of things to see and do in the Fredericksburg area.

First Day Sail and First Night Sail
Last week we celebrated our birthday's and anniversary with #2 son - Jake and his sweet wife Kelly and her mom Ruth. We had a wonderful dinner at Texas Land and Cattle. After dinner we all went to the marina to see the boat. Liv and Luke loved it - Luke doesn't like spiders, but Liv has no fear, she was all over the boat from bow to stern! She loved the V-berth and wanted to play sleep - take off shoes! I can't wait till we can take them out for a sail!
First night sail was a little more eventful! We motored out just fine - Don is always worried about this - navigating in the marina is tricky and it was a little windy! He figured out about the motor problem - there was a cable to lock the motor that was restricting the lift mechanism of the motor - problem solved! The wind was a little tricky! We had a little trouble with both the Genoa and mail sail, but finally got them up. Again Don heeled the boat a little farther than I prefer. I hope I get used to that! The wind was a little high and coming in we had to drop the Genoa sail. The starboard rope ended up out of the pulley and on the port side and stalled the motor just as we were coming in. If that was not bad enough - the gas line got disconnected and the motor would not restart! So we are washing into BIG Rocks and then into mud - deep mud!!
We were stuck for about 45 minutes - not fun, but a learning experience! Once the gas line was reconnected the motor started right up. We did not get out of the mud for a while, motor ran good, just not quite as strong as Don would like. I suspect we will be replacing the old motor in the near future!!! We finally got headed in with a pretty good wind and just as we are headed to our slip the motor failed - we bumped the empty slip up from us before Don got the motor re cranked, but didn't do any damage to pier or boat! Lots of good learning experiences!
Next adventure - we are headed to Fredericksburg for the weekend with Don's sister and her husband - they have an annual Car Swap Meet. We are also meeting family there as well. This is one of our favorites - we should have lots of fun. I should have new posts next week!
Sailing
Day 3 - Best Friend Paula and sister Anna come out to the Cove to check out the pool and the boat! Jackie was fishing - Don was itching to go out - so off he went. Only a couple of problems -rigged the Genoa sail wrong and had to climb up to the stern to fix it! Anna, Paula, and I were eating, drinking.... and then went to the pool! Ask Anna about the wonderful dressing room????
We had a great swim - we were the only ones at the pool!!! The restaurant and club closed a couple of years ago - they are looking for someone to rent and bring it back - that would be nice!
We sat around talked and drank for hours - had a great time. Don took out the boat before we could cristen it, so we will have to do that another time!
Coming adventures of First sail with Ginger & Don and First Night Sale!
Sailing, Sailing, over the Ocean Blue
So the story begins Day 1 - The Purchase: We met the couple to see the boat at 10:00AM Tuesday Morning. If this one did not work, we had already lined up another appointment in Rock port, TX - very close to Port Aransas. We were packed and ready to go. We knew by 10:15 that this boat was the one. So the overnight trip to Rock port was off. I felt bad when I called him -he was very disappointed we were not coming. We would still like to have that boat as well --it has a really neat history and the size we would like to have!! We went home with Don and Diane - of course The Captain and First Mate! Signed papers and were back at the marina within the hour. We wanted to open up everything since they had not used things for over a year. The Captain's health has taken a bad turn and he probably can't sail again for a while. We opened open the hatch and everything so there would be clean fresh air in the cabin! We came home to get drinks, a little food and Jackie! She was ready to go. After we got back home we had a torrential down pore and all our sails were all exposed. We tried to wait it out but finally headed over about 6:00PM Don was in his truck ahead of us we thought he left, but I guess we left first. Jackie and I went in her little car, it is hard for her to get up into Don's Dully Diesel. Just past Town east about 4 miles from the house the Rain had stopped. We got 2 inches that evening in the Grove!!! Well I got to The Cove and Jake was going to met us there, and there was no Don and we did not have a key card for the gate!!! But the good news is there was also no rain at the marina either. There has been a guy working on #3blue - I think he lives there too!! There is a penisula path you can walk down beside the slips - - so I went up to him and asked if he could open the gate for us. His come back was "if you don't mind I am in my under wear" My reply was if you don't mind, I don't mind - I thought Jake was going to have a stoke! I had told Jake the first boat open was it. He thought our boat was a clunker, that has long, long ago seen is last days on the open water! We all got a laugh out of that one! About 10 minutes later Don got there - I gues he got lost in the Black Hole - it has gotten bigger since we moved from Kirby Street! Jake even liked the boat enought to talk pictures with his phone!!! He was going to pick up sweet Liv at her cousions and did not stay long. We were trying to get the storage unit and foot locker cleared to water blast everything the next day. I think it was about midnight when we left. Jackie caught a couple of crappie, one bass and a cat fish.

The year of my Retirement
In June, I went to Padre Island with my sister, mother and best friend. My oldest son and his wife, my other sister and her husband were all there as well. We went to the beach everyday, ended each day at the pool and a big dinner with everyone! We had 20+ at dinner each night--my sweet daughter-in-law coordinated our evening meals together and we had a blast!!! As soon as we got back from Padre, my husband and I left Dallas for a week long adventure. Don had bought an old sailboat on E-bay and we had to go to Orlando, FL to get it! Well it wasn't quite as good looking as the pictures, and a big big project! We did tow it home after a 3 day stay in Pensacola! We bicycled all over the Pensacola and will go back again in a heart beat! In less than a week, I was on the Texas Coast, then Mobile, Alabama; Orlando, and Pensacola, Florida--and have shells and beautiful white sand to prove it!!!! I think I was at home 8 days in June!!!
July started with our 41st anniversary, then our birthdays - mine and Dons are 1 week apart! We spent July 4th with #2 son and his sweet wife! They had a big pool party at their house!!! Lots of good food, friends and family!!!
Ever since getting back from Orlando with the project boat, sweet husband had been on a quest to find another sailboat that did not need work and we could get in the water NOW!!! After looking at about 7 or 8 boats, we finally found the boat! We bought our boat from an older couple (I know we are old, but older than us!) who had had her at Lake Ray Hubbard for the past 12 years. The previous captain was really and "Old Salty Sailor" and Don really liked him. The marina is only 12 miles from our house and the slip has lots of extras! It is covered with lots of deck space. It is the perfect place for us. My 80 year old mother can fish till the cows come home! She has been fishing 3 times in the past week and caught something every time!
This is only the beginning of my adventures- more to come!!! Oh I might mention, that we also bought a row-boat/sail boat in April - had to go to Kansas for this one--another day another story!
